McDonald's Field Trips - March 2006

Objective: Experiential learning…fun filled and educational.
Who went: About 3,000 children from 21 CEC centres visited some 6 selected McDonald's outlets. The planning of such trips was a tremendous challenge for the teachers [320 of them]. The students were systematically guided through the outlets. For most of us, this represents a life-time experience.

What they learned:

How a typical outlet was run, starting from the front counter to the kitchen.
Front Counter: How food was ordered, paid and delivered at the counter.
Kitchen: How various food were prepared and packed.
Chiller Room: Children were given a tour to look at huge freezers and frozen food.
Practicals: a few children had a hand in preparing burgers! Real fun!

Take home benefits:

Apart from fun, the children were given treats of light snacks.
Children really understood what went behind the counter, much more than the average adult would know.
With this experience, the children will definitely add a good measure of confidence in their social rounds with their peers [who are not from CEC].
They were offered to join the Ronald McDonald’s Kids Club membership at a discounted fee.

13th Annual CEC Fun Camp 2006

The 13th R.E.A.L Fun camp was held from 21st~24th August. The response was overwhelming. A total of 700 children from ages 4~9 gathered in various CEC locations to have four days of fun and “edventure” [education through adventure].

What is R.E.A.L Camp?:

Conducted during holiday breaks, children gathered in CEC Learning Centres for 4 days of fun, educational projects and “edventure” trips to various nature-parks and sometimes, organized shows.
The cost of the camp varies with the contents and length [usually 4 days] of the camp. The fee for the August camp was RM 210 per child.

What is R.E.A.L Camp?:

CEC children can invite their friends & relatives to join the camp.
Anyone between the ages of 4~9, subjected to approval of the application.
CEC kids receive circulars from the schools inviting them to join the camp, twice a year. There will also be banners and flyers distributed to selected residential areas.
For non-CEC kids, you may call up the telephone numbers indicated, fill up the application forms, etc.

Objectives:

Inculcate good values and good habits in children in their everyday life.
Create awareness and love for nature and environment.
Discover the various multiple intellingences [talents & interests] in your children.

What happens [2006 Camp]:

On the first day, ice breaking and getting children to socialize.
Through various activities and projects, the children learned to work individually as well as in teams.
Activities:
-handicrafts like pencil holders, etc
-making of “hoopsters”, making them fly. Understanding why they fly through lessons in Science & Experiments.
-visit to A’Fomosa Animal World Safari, a day of fun, bus ride, educational talks on nature and environment, animal & wild-wild west showtime, visit to zoo & and other things.

Take home benefits:

Children met new friends and learned to socialize.
Valuable knowledge and experiences are learned during the nature and wild life sessions; some of which will be remembered for life.
Debriefing sessions guide children to move steadily toward good values; adopting loving and caring instincts for nature and environment.

Chocolate Factory Visits - October 2006

Objective: Experiential learning…fun filled and educational
Who went: Similar to the McDonald’s field trip in March 2006, some 3,000 kids from 21 CEC centres in the Kelang Valley were guided through the Beryl's Chocolate Factory situated in Sri Kembangan, Selangor.

What happens:

The children were given a briefing and shown a video clip on the manufacturing processes in their operation room.
A representative from Beryl’s guided them around the plant. You should see the thrill of the kids’ faces when they saw the way chocolates were moulded into all shapes and sizes. They also witnessed the quality control and finally packaging processes.

Take-home benefits:

For all the children, this was their first visit to a factory. They related to very well because chocolate is every child’s best treat. Now they got to see and experience how this lovely thing was made.
Yet for some, the dream of ‘seeing’ themselves in various key positions in the factory began here. Who knows, one of them might see himself/herself owning the factory!
We can be sure, for the next couple of weeks, the kids will tell his/her friends about the extraordinary experience.
Kids were also given goody bags to take home.

Press Release ISO 9001:2000 - October 2002 - KL

Malaysia First: Education Ventures' CEC Kindergartens Achieve

Kuala Lumpur: Subang Jaya-based Education Ventures Sdn Bhd's Child Enrichment Centre (CEC) has become the first kindergarten in Malaysia to achieve full-site certification of conformity to the ISO 9001:2000 quality management standard.

This means that an independent auditor has verified that the quality system at Education Ventures and CEC meets the standard's requirements, which include, in particular, organisational processes in place to ensure customer satisfaction, quality delivery of educational services and continuous improvement. In the case of CEC, the "customer" is a base of approximately3.000 (4,200 in 2006) children.

The International Standards Organisation or ISO, a non-governmental organisation, is the one of the world's foremost developers of voluntary technical standards. Since it began operations in 1947, it has covered almost all sectors of business and technology, although it is best known for the ISO 9000 series, which is implemented by several hundred thousand organisations in 160 countries.

ISO itself does not carry out certification and does not award the ISO 9000 certificates. This is done independently of ISO by some 740 certification bodies globally. ISO does not control these bodies, although it does develop voluntary ISO/IEC Guides and Standards that encourage best practice and consistency in certification and related activities. Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, an international, independent assessment and certification body is the ISO auditor for Education Ventures and CEC. United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) provided the certification stamp.

Education Ventures, which employs over 500 people, has achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification for the full range of its head office operations, kindergarten operations as well as its school operations. These services include, among others, coordination of the standards-development programme, curriculum development, administration and marketing.

"We implemented ISO 9001:2000 to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the company's business processes in order that we may provide the best educational services to our customers," group general manager of Education Ventures Ng Yee Hing said. "The decision to have our quality service system certified after an independent audit is one that was taken purely on business grounds - we wanted to be on the cutting edge, both internally as well as externally."

"That said, thousands of companies the world over have opted for certification because of the perception that an independent confirmation of ISO 9001 conformity adds value to their business," Ng added. "In the case of Education Ventures, our customers were not pushing us towards certification, but we chose to be certified to independently demonstrate to ourselves and to our clients (students and their parents) that we are quality-conscious. It is widely acknowledged that a detailed quality management system should not only exist, but also should be maintained and continually improved. At Education Ventures and CEC, our quality procedures should reflect the real and on-going needs of our business processes to produce high quality education."

"Certification to ISO 9001:2000 is not a means for us to display a certificate in the marketplace," Ng said. "Through the certification, we endeavour, as a company, to establish a solid base for on-going improvement in our operations, consistency in our customer care and service delivery and of course, a healthy bottomline. By establishing consistency in these processes we will then be in the position to provide stability, improve our services and customer satisfaction as well as reduce waste. With the proper audits in place, Education Ventures, as a company, will be able to resolve operational problems more quickly by proactively identifying, isolating and tackling the root causes, rather than reacting to the effect. This is critical in light of our need to establish a firm foundation for the management of customers' satisfaction and growth. The certification is also crucial because it increases the awareness of our staff in company requirements and activities. It also provides a solid platform to continuously train our teachers and staff to provide all our valued customers (in our case, students) with a superior educational experience."

Education Ventures, which commenced business in Malaysia in 1986 is a total education service provider. It currently operates a network of 22 kindergartens, two private primary and secondary schools as well as an art and design college.

A Discovery Indeed 12 August 2006 - KL
The Real Eye-Q Discovery 2006 is a community project that has been designed to promote the concept of experiential learning with an emphasis on starting right. Only when this is done can its participants embark on a journey of continuous active learning to ensure that the desired performance benchmarks in their life are fulfilled and constantly enhanced. It is an ‘expedition’ in every sense of the word for the child and his/her parents to discover how he/she is smart and in the process work towards becoming a person who has a vibrant combination of dynamic interpersonal skills, individual creativity, problem-solving skills and leadership qualities to do well in life. This discovery event is open to all children between the ages of five (5) and seven (7).

How did the Real Eye-Q Discovery 2006 come about?
This event has been adapted from a national level competition that was previously known as The National M.I. (Multiple Intelligence) Challenge (held in 2003 and 2004).

It has been redesigned as a community project instead of a competition to consciously move away from the ‘competitive’ mode, which would inevitably tax the young participants physically as well as emotionally. Through a ‘discovery’ mode, the concept of experiential learning and the importance of finding out how a child is smart would be more effectively presented.

REAL Eye-Q Discovery Facts
Unlike other events, the REAL Eye-Q Discovery 2006 is unique as it is a non-competitive event and participants get to discover their own unique strengths and potential through participation in a variety of fun-filled games and activities.
Each participant will be given a specially designed ‘passport,’ which will be stamped at each ‘intelligence station’ upon completing the activities/games.

The REAL Eye-Q Discovery 2006 enables children to discover and realise they are each a winner in their own way.

Each participant will be awarded a Badge of Achievement and a specially designed Certificate of Discovery.
Each participant of the REAL Eye-Q Discovery 2006 (present on August 12, 2006) will be entitled to one (1) draw in the Grand Prize Draw.

Each participant with his/her parent(s)/guardian will sit for a R.E.A.L Intelligence diagnostic test before they are engaged with the games and activities.

Upon completion of the games and activities, counselors will explain the R.E.A.L approach to pre-school education to the participant’s parent(s)/guardian to give them a better understanding of the concept and techniques of the approach.

Why was this event developed and organised?

The objective of this discovery is to promote the concept of the development of the total child, particularly in light of an increasingly competitive global marketplace. It is our fervent hope that this event would encourage parents to play an active role in the development of R.E.A.L (Result Enhancing through Active Learning) intelligences in their children.

Who are the people involved?

This event is developed and organised by Real Education Corporation (a unit of the Education Ventures Group of Companies) in collaboration with Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn Bhd.

Directors from Abbot Laboratories and Education Ventures and Esther Yong, Project Manager.
